As someone who hadn't read the book (and knew nothing about it), I'm ultimately glad that they went the way they did with the marketing - mostly because I'm not sure that it could have been as spoiler-free any other way. The "look, it's Narnia Lite!" approach doesn't need to reveal any of the plot, wheras the misfits / uncomfortable home / friendship / "imagination" needs an "and then...", and I can't see any way of doing the movie justice without revealing at least some spoilers.
The trailer was certainly good enough to make me see the film (even if only because nothing better was coming out that week), and any kind of spoilers would have detracted from the incredible emotional roller-coaster ride of that first viewing (why, yes, I love to leave the cinema with my eyes all read and puffy because I spent the entire second half of the movie crying like a baby!)
